Revitalization of former EMBROS Theater in Athens

Brief resume of the revitalization  of former EMBROS Theater in Athens (Greece):

For the past year as Greek people was struggling to survive against the current imposed policies, a beam of light was lightening Psiri neighborhood in downtown Athens.

A group of actors, artists, dancers, architects with the aid of the local Psiri community began to animate an abandoned for years historical theatre in central Athens.

During these past twelve months of the revitalisation of the EMBROS Theatre, everybody involved in this project has been experimenting to create an environment of participation and cultural production, which goes beyond the administrative governance and the logic of profit.

Therefore all those months the cultural production was profitable for the  inhabitants of the city and for the neighborhood in particular: there have been performed experimental theatrical pieces by new theatrical groups, dancing and art performances, political debates concerning the greek and global crisis and other more specific debates and presentations on architecture, urbanism, urban gardening and various workshops.

For the inhabitants of the neighborhood, EMBROS Theatre was a place to gather and communicate; trying to create a net of solidarity during the hard times we are living. We planned and organised several events for this very problematic central neighborhood of Athens like cooking and distribution of food, collecting medicines etc. EMBROS Theatre was the place of our weekly community assemblies.

On Thursday 25/10/2012, the State owner of the building of EMBROS Theatre is going to seal the building with the intention to sell it to the private sector.

EMBROS Theatre is a Common Good for everyone involved or who wants to get involved in this new cultural project.

Support our struggle against the privatisation of EMBROS Theatre.

Gathering on Thursday  25/10/2012 at 11.00 a.m. outside EMBROS Theatre: Riga Palamidou 2, Psirri, Athens.
